Its large 3½ acre setting, one of the largest residential parcels in this part of the city, adds to its significance. The reviewer recommended acceptance under Criterion C.","narrative":"Hard Bargain is a two-story white weatherboard house at 1105 Park Street in Charlottesville, set above a brick English basement. John D. Watson bought land along the road to Cochran's Mill in 1876 and 1877, and the main house went up in 1878, after a small building, perhaps the present cottage, was erected in 1876. The property marked the northern limit of 19th-century suburban development along Park Street. The house has a bellcast tin roof with gables on four sides, scroll-bracketed cornices, tall narrow windows and a bracketed bay window and veranda. A large rear wing was probably added in the late 1890s. After 1903 the house changed owners many times and was often rented. It was reportedly slated for demolition before being bought in 1941 and repaired, with much original fabric surviving. It is valued as an example of simple Italianate Victorian design and for its spacious 3½ acre lawn setting.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian, Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed in good condition and used as a residence; the same family has owned it since 1941.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:01.082635-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/73/6786/41678673/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/84003521.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003521/12bda3727f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003521/12bda3727f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Nickmorgan2","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hard_Bargain.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Nickmorgan2</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hard_Bargain.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678673","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_Bargain_(Charlottesville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15222997"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/charlottesville/hard-bargain-84003521/"}
