It is one of only four pre-Revolutionary War buildings surviving in Yonkers. It represents the small farmhouses built in Westchester County in the eighteenth century and keeps many of its historic construction features.","narrative":"Built around 1740 as a tenant farmhouse on the Manor of Philipsburgh, this one-story frame house sits on a stone basement built into a hillside beside Tuckahoe Road in Yonkers. A two-story porch spans the east front. Additions came later: a doctor's office around 1810, an upper story around 1850, and a small wing around 1880. Inside, plaster walls, hand-hewn beams and a large stone kitchen fireplace with bake oven survive. A caretaker's cottage and a former barn, both from about 1850, are part of the property. Thomas Sherwood leased the land and built the house; his son Stephen bought it when the manor was divided in 1785. Later owners included Dr. John Ingersoll, Yonkers's first resident physician, and the Weed family. In the twentieth century it served as a speakeasy and restaurant before Consolidated Edison acquired it in 1955 and donated the buildings to the Yonkers Historical Society. It is one of only four pre-Revolutionary buildings left in the city.","period_of_significance":"circa 1740","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied; owned by the Yonkers Historical Society (buildings) on land owned by Consolidated Edison.
