The mason was Lindsey Pike.","why_significant":"The house is significant as the home of a prominent local attorney and civic leader. It is also a typical mid-nineteenth century vernacular residence for an upper middle class family, and one of few to survive the great fire of 1864. It is among the first buildings by the prolific local mason Lindsey Pike.","narrative":"Built around 1855 on fashionable Warren Street in Glens Falls, this brick house was home to Enoch H. Rosekrans, a lawyer who served as district attorney and county judge, as village president in 1855, and as first legal counsel to the Glens Falls Insurance Company. The two and one-half story building has a slate gable roof, a five-bay front with a pedimented portico, stone lintels, round-arched attic windows and paired chimneys at each gable end. Its restrained detailing blends vernacular Greek Revival and Italianate styles. Mason Lindsey Pike built it early in his career; after the 1864 fire he reportedly built more than half of the replacement brick commercial buildings downtown. The house predates that fire and is one of few residences that survived it, which makes it a rare pre-Civil War dwelling in the city. Around 1900 it became a private hospital, and since 1925 it has served as a church rectory.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; builder Lindsey Pike, mason, Glens Falls","architectural_style":"Transitional vernacular Greek Revival and Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Present use is office-residential; it has been the rectory of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church since 1925.
