The architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"It is argued to be an intact, representative example of a late nineteenth century Italianate brick house reflecting the taste of a prosperous Glens Falls businessman. It was occupied by Augustus Sherman Rugge, a prominent shirt, collar and cuff manufacturer. It is also one of very few brick Italianate residences remaining in the city.","narrative":"Built around 1880 at 428 Glen Street in Glens Falls, this two and one half story brick house follows the Italianate style. It has a gabled roof, two-story cross gables projecting from the north and south sides, tall segmental arched windows with stone sills and molded cast-iron lintels, and a bracketed bay window on the south gable. Porches with turned posts and paneled balustrades replaced the original ones about 1906. The house stood on a lot owned by lumber baron Augustus Sherman and was occupied by his grandson, Augustus Sherman Rugge. Rugge ran the A.S. Rugge Shirt Company, a major local shirt, collar and cuff maker that employed 150 workers and had sales outlets in Boston and New York. The house is one of very few brick Italianate residences left in the city and keeps significant exterior integrity. It was rehabilitated around 1979-80 for office and residential use, and it is part of a neighborhood of large late nineteenth century homes.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Rehabilitated around 1979/80 with partial exterior restoration; present use is office-residential; condition listed as fair, with deterioration noted from sandblasted exterior walls.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.319451-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84003394.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003394/c4d465f697-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003394/c4d465f697-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:428_Glen_Street,_Glens_Falls_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:428_Glen_Street,_Glens_Falls_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315351","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._S._Rugge_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706155"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/warren-county/rugge-a-s-house-84003394/"}
