The form gives construction dates of 1895 and about 1905.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a notable and highly intact example of Tudor Revival residential architecture in the Lake George region, where few examples of the style exist. It also reflects the early twentieth-century resort era of \"Millionaires' Row\" on the lake's west shore. It is described as the most intact surviving property of that group, and as a rare residential work by architect Charles S. Peabody.","narrative":"Wikiosco is a two and one-half story summer estate house on a landscaped 5.2-acre parcel between Route 9N and the west shore of Lake George. Built of granite ashlar and fieldstone below and half-timbered stucco above, it has stone porches, a polygonal stone tower, a terrace and two tall fieldstone chimneys. Inside are oak beams, carved oak mantels, ornate plasterwork, stained glass, an oval dining room and servants' quarters. It was designed about 1905 by New York architect Charles S. Peabody for his father, Royal C. Peabody, a Brooklyn businessman who founded the Brooklyn Edison Company. The house is recognized as an early and rare Tudor Revival work in the Lake George region and as the most intact survivor of the grand summer houses once known as Millionaires' Row. Many neighboring estates were lost to fire, deterioration and lakefront development, and the rest of the original Peabody property has been subdivided.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Charles S. A former ice house on the parcel has been extensively altered and no longer contributes.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.561377-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84003386.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322795","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_C._Peabody_Estate","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7373869"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/warren-county/peabody-royal-c-estate-84003386/"}
