Parks, son of a local paper manufacturer.","why_significant":"It is described as one of the best preserved Queen Anne style residences remaining in Glens Falls. Of five intact individually listed Queen Anne houses in the multiple resource area, it retains the greatest integrity of design, materials and workmanship. It also best represents the substantial upper middle class home of the turn of the century.","narrative":"Built around 1900 for George H. Parks, son of a wealthy local paper manufacturer, this house at 444 Glen Street in Glens Falls is a large, asymmetrical Queen Anne residence. It has a slate hipped roof, a random ashlar stone foundation, narrow clapboards on the first story and patterned shingles above. A raised porch with a port-cochere wraps the front, and a massive cylindrical tower with a bell-cast slate roof dominates the main elevation. Inside, a great central stair hall features a hooded tile fireplace, paneled oak wainscoting and ceilings, sliding oak doors and an intact butler's pantry. The house is considered one of the best preserved Queen Anne homes left in the city, and among five comparable examples in the area it keeps the most of its original design, materials and workmanship. Later changes include an elevator added about 1940, conversion to offices and apartments about 1945, and the loss of the carriage barn to fire around 1975.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":[],"status_note":"Converted around 1945 from a single-family house to office and residential use; the carriage barn burned around 1975.
