W. Thompson for lumber manufacturer William McEchron.","why_significant":"The house is a notable example of late nineteenth century Queen Anne/Romanesque residential design in Glens Falls. It is also associated with William McEchron, a leading lumber manufacturer and one of the city's most influential citizens. It reflects upper middle class architectural taste of the 1890s.","narrative":"Built in 1891 at 65 Ridge Street in Glens Falls, this two and one half story residence combines Queen Anne and Romanesque features. The first story is rock-faced random ashlar sandstone with beaded mortar joints, and a pair of stone arches frames the paneled oak entrance doors. A massive stone arch supports a porte-cochere formed by the curve of the west roof slope, while a raised porch with turned columns and balusters spans the west front. Gables, decorative panels, shingled sheathing and balconies give the asymmetrical massing its varied texture. The house was built for William McEchron, a leading lumber manufacturer who ran the Morgan Lumber Company with partner Jones Ordway and held major interests in the Glens Falls Paper Mill Company. His wealth shaped the prominent location and fashionable design of the home. Converted to offices around 1920, the building still has oak paneling, sliding parlor doors and original moldings inside.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; builder A.
