Cochran.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is an important local example of late Gothic Revival church design, with an unusual cruciform plan and a crossing tower and spire. It is described as one of the last Gothic style churches built in the area and as the tallest structure in Dawson. The building is also tied to the coal and coke industry and to the architect Thomas Pringle.","narrative":"Located on the northeast corner of Griscom and Howell Streets in Dawson, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, this solid stone church was built between 1922 and 1927 as a memorial to coal and coke industrialist Philip G. Cochran. His widow, Sarah (Moore) Cochran, paid for it at a cost of $325,000. Thomas Pringle, a Scottish-born architect working in Pittsburgh, designed it in the late Gothic Revival style. Its cruciform plan has a crossing tower and an octagonal spire rising 105 feet, and its walls are uncoursed ashlar Beaver County limestone. The nave has an arched ceiling without a clerestory and is paved with hand-made tiles, and its western window of five lancets was made by Henry Hunt. A two-story south wing added classrooms, an auditorium and a kitchen. It is regarded as an unusual local example of Gothic church design, recalling English and Scottish parish churches. It is the third church on the site and has remained largely unchanged since construction.","period_of_significance":"1922-1927","architect_builder":"Thomas Pringle (architect)","architectural_style":"Late Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Unaltered since construction and well maintained by its congregation; condition checked as excellent, original site.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:34.279537-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/84003364.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003364/b9f130ebff-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003364/b9f130ebff-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Generic1139","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cochran_Memorial_United_Methodist_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Generic1139</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cochran_Memorial_United_Methodist_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71995212","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cochran_Memorial_United_Methodist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5139426"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/fayette-county/cochran-philip-g-memorial-united-methodist-church-84003364/"}
