Continuous Dix family ownership adds to its integrity. Architecturally, it is a distinctive Colonial Revival renovation of an earlier Italianate house form, which is unusual within the Glens Falls Multiple Resource Area.","narrative":"Built in 1866 on Ridge Street in Glens Falls, the James L. Dix House is a two-story brick residence with a hipped slate roof, corbeled chimneys, brick quoins and a limestone foundation. It joins a smaller gable-roofed brick house, thought to date from about 1810, which serves as a rear wing. The original Italianate character survives in the modillion cornice, tall paired windows and interior features such as a carved central staircase, marble mantels and parquet floors. Around 1900 the Dix family added pedimented Colonial Revival porches and entrance porticos and removed the earlier porch. A cupola was removed later. James L. Dix was an industrialist and financier who began by quarrying Glens Falls black marble, then owned a foundry making pulp mill and sawmill machinery, and later moved into paper manufacturing and banking. The house reflects the wealth of that industrial era and the way one family's changing tastes reshaped a home over several generations.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular brick with Italianate and later Colonial Revival (Georgian Revival) details","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a residence, originally and at the time of the inventory; condition listed as good; some conversion to apartments around 1920.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.964209-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84003268.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003268/7510e58a44-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003268/7510e58a44-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:191_Ridge_Street,_Glens_Falls_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:191_Ridge_Street,_Glens_Falls_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315334","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_L._Dix_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6137547"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/warren-county/dix-james-l-house-84003268/"}
