Its buildings date from about 1830 to 1850.","why_significant":"The district is described as the highest concentration of late Federal and early Greek Revival vernacular architecture in Duanesburg, and is made up almost entirely of Greek Revival buildings. It also reflects Mariaville's role as an early industrial and commercial center tied to the mills on Chuctanunda Creek and the man-made lake. Local figures such as Silas Marsh, Hiram Hansett and James Frost are associated with its development.","narrative":"Mariaville Historic District is a compact cluster of eight properties on the northwest shore of Mariaville Lake in Duanesburg, Schenectady County. Seven are contributing: five houses, a church and a general store, along with several outbuildings. Nearly all are wood-framed, clapboard-sided Greek Revival buildings from about 1830 to 1850, with gable roofs, wide friezes, corner pilasters and trabeated entrances. The hamlet grew from a grist mill built after James Duane dammed Chuctanunda Creek in 1793, forming the lake. In 1830 Silas Marsh added a saw mill and grist mill, then built his house and general store. Other notable buildings include the First Presbyterian Church of 1842, its parsonage, the Hiram Hansett House and the Frost Homestead. The district was listed because it holds the town's densest group of vernacular Greek Revival architecture and recalls an early industrial and commercial center. The water-powered industries faded in the early twentieth century, and the area is now a summer resort community.","period_of_significance":"1830-1850","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival (vernacular), with late Federal features","criteria":[],"status_note":"Mariaville is currently a summer resort community; most buildings are slightly altered but retain substantial integrity. One 1970s A-frame house is non-contributing.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.427542-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84003267.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003267/139182e949-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003267/139182e949-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Vicki Cammer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:8822_Mariaville_Road,_Mariaville,_NY_Much_work_has_been_done_on_this_home._It_has_been_repainted,_repaired_and_a_new_roof_put_on.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Vicki Cammer</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:8822_Mariaville_Road,_Mariaville,_NY_Much_work_has_been_done_on_this_home._It_has_been_repainted,_repaired_and_a_new_roof_put_on.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314572","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariaville_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6762509"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/schenectady-county/mariaville-historic-district-84003267/"}
