It was built by Alexander Delos \"Boss\" Jones on a 151.2-acre farm.","why_significant":"It is a representative example of the octagon house mode popularized by Orson S. Fowler, and one of only two surviving octagons in Duanesburg. It is also the work of Boss Jones, the town's most prolific and skilled master carpenter, and uses an uncommon stacked plank construction technique.","narrative":"Built in the 1850s on a farm along Route 395 just north of Delanson, this eight-sided farmhouse is clad in clapboard and rises two stories under a low-pitched polygonal roof with a central chimney. Greek Revival details include a full entablature and corner pilasters on each facade, and a hipped porch with octagonal posts wraps the main block. A one and one-half story wing extends to the north. Carpenter Alexander Delos \"Boss\" Jones built it for Nathaniel C. Jenkins, a prominent member of the Society of Friends in Quaker Street. It reflects the octagon design promoted by Orson S. Fowler in 1848 and is one of only two octagons left in Duanesburg. Its walls use stacked plank construction, a technique known in only three Jones houses. Two barns, a shed and an octagonal gazebo survive as contributing outbuildings, and the entire 151.2-acre farm is included to reflect its agricultural use.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Alexander Delos (Boss) Jones","architectural_style":"Octagon mode with Greek Revival style features","criteria":[],"status_note":"Private residence in excellent condition; the farm remains in agricultural use and no threats are known.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.461006-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84003227.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003227/60b845f4ee-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003227/60b845f4ee-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Schenectady County","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jenkins_Octagon_House_Oct_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Schenectady County</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jenkins_Octagon_House_Oct_09.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314586","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenkins_Octagon_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6177610"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/schenectady-county/jenkins-octagon-house-84003227/"}
