It keeps the characteristic simple massing, steep roof and frontal belfry of its type, along with its original clapboard, windows and modest gable and rafter details. The congregation began as a branch of the Berkshire church in the 1880s.","narrative":"This small frame church sits on the north side of East Berkshire Road at the western edge of the hamlet of East Berkshire, in Tioga County. Built in 1888, it is a one-story building with clapboard siding, a steep standing-seam metal roof and a square louvered belfry above the gabled front. The facade is three bays wide and the building is four bays deep. Original two-over-two windows with louvered blinds survive, and the gable has lattice-work detail and slightly scalloped rafter ends. Inside, the meeting hall keeps its tongue and groove wainscot, Victorian casings and simple pews. A two-story addition extends east from the rear and was built early; a small shed-roofed addition at the back is recent. The congregation began in the 1880s as a branch of the Berkshire church, and Reverend George Beers, its first pastor from 1886, helped bring about construction and incorporation in 1888. It is considered the only example of vernacular Victorian religious architecture in Berkshire, and it remains an active church.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular Victorian religious architecture","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a church, with Sunday services; condition is rated good on the inventory form, with early and recent additions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.399502-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84003098.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003098/3a8c9849b7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003098/3a8c9849b7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Maddmonkey","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:East_Berkshire_United_Methodist_Church_--_New_York.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Maddmonkey</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:East_Berkshire_United_Methodist_Church_--_New_York.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315096","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Berkshire_United_Methodist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5327864"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/tioga-county/east-berkshire-united-methodist-church-84003098/"}
