It keeps the type's distinctive features and survives virtually unaltered. It is also the most important and architecturally distinguished of at least seven houses associated with the early-settling Ball family.","narrative":"Built probably around 1849 on the southern edge of Berkshire hamlet in Tioga County, this two-story frame house is a temple-form Greek Revival residence. Its four-pier portico has square piers with recessed panels and a full entablature that continues across the front and side elevations. The facade has four bays, clapboard siding, six-over-six double-hung windows and mostly original louvered blinds. A single-story kitchen and carriage or wood shed wing extends behind the main block. A Victorian pent roof shelters a side entrance. The house is one of only two of its type in the town and survives virtually unaltered. Stephen Ball, a son of an early settler family, farmed, ran a brickyard from 1827 to about 1836, and built the house after selling a nearby tavern stand. It is the most distinguished of at least seven Ball-related houses nearby. The property stayed in family hands until 1980 and still serves as a residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival (temple-form)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a residence; condition rated fair on the inventory form, with a modern non-contributing garage and shed on the property.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.466777-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84003077.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003077/f13917a787-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84003077/f13917a787-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Maddmonkey","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WDSC00185.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Maddmonkey</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WDSC00185.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315088","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Ball_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7608641"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/tioga-county/ball-stephen-house-84003077/"}
