It includes a c. 1850 mill, a tenant house, an 1867 proprietor's house, an ice house, a well and the water-power canal, pond and tailrace.","why_significant":"The complex is argued to be a rare and intact example of a nineteenth and early twentieth century grist and merchant mill in the Catskill Region. It retains original milling machinery, nearly all subsidiary buildings and its water-power system. Its vernacular wood-frame buildings are also described as virtually unaltered.","narrative":"Rockland Mill Complex is a group of mill buildings and water-power features along the Beaver Kill in northern Sullivan County, New York. The centerpiece is a grist mill built around 1850 by \"Diamond Jo\" Reynolds on the site of an earlier 1790s mill. Ezekiel Palen acquired it about five years later, and his later successor converted it from a custom mill for local farmers into a merchant mill and feed store served by the nearby railroad at Roscoe. Operations ended soon after 1920. The mill keeps three turbines, three runs of millstones, cherry sifting cabinets and grain-lifting equipment. The surrounding complex also includes the power canal, mill pond, tailrace, a c. 1850 tenant house, Palen's 1867 house, a well and an ice house. All are simple clapboard-covered wood buildings in a regional vernacular tradition. The property was listed because few comparable mill sites in the Catskills survive so completely, though part of the mill has collapsed and the dam is a 1958 replacement.","period_of_significance":"c. 1850-c. 1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as deteriorated and unused; a corner of the mill collapsed in the late 1970s, and plans were underway to stabilize it and develop it as a museum.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.653604-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84003062.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322405","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockland_Mill_Complex","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7355453"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/sullivan-county/rockland-mill-complex-84003062/"}
