Built as a one-story schoolhouse in the 1840s, it was moved to its present site in 1874 and given a second story in 1875.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is architecturally significant for its stucco exterior, applied around 1920 by German emigrant Karl Paul. It is described as unique in Sullivan County and an exceptional example of vernacular design in stucco. Paul turned an undistinguished frame house into one with distinctive classical character, using contrasting textures and well-proportioned detail.","narrative":"Along Kirk's Road at the northern edge of Narrowsburg stands a modest frame house with an unusually refined exterior. It began in the 1840s as a one-story clapboard schoolhouse. In 1874 Michael Kirk bought the land and moved the building to its present spot near a brook, then added a second story and a porch with Italianate columns and scroll-sawn brackets in 1875. Around 1920 his son James had the house resurfaced in stucco over expanded metal lath. The work was done by Karl Paul, a German emigrant recently arrived in America. He stippled the wall surfaces, added smooth corner quoins, molded sills and water tables, and created a pediment with a blind circular panel and keystones. The house is considered unique in Sullivan County, where few stucco exteriors show comparable skill. Paul died soon after finishing it, so this may be his only surviving work. The house stayed in the Kirk family until 1979.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Karl Paul","architectural_style":"Vernacular design in stucco with neo-classical detailing","criteria":[],"status_note":"Form lists condition as fair, the building as moved, and status as unoccupied with work in progress; use is private residence.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.655863-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84003043.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322381","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirk_House_(Narrowsburg,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6415458"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/sullivan-county/kirk-house-84003043/"}
