They form the south end of a continuous Church Street streetscape that the old line cut in two. Their scale, materials and vernacular styling match the rest of the Stockade, and they stand apart from the larger commercial buildings of State Street.","narrative":"Three brick row buildings at 16, 18 and 20 South Church Street in Schenectady were added to the Stockade Historic District in 1984. The original district, listed in 1973, covered about 82 acres and 386 properties, but its southern boundary cut through this block because of a professional error. The added buildings date from about 1800, 1850 and 1900. The oldest is two stories with a gable roof and dormers. The other two are three stories with Italianate detailing, including a bracketed metal cornice at number 20 and a modillioned cornice at number 18. Number 20 also has a c. 1920 copper storefront and intact early twentieth-century interiors. Two of the three combine shops and housing. They complete a continuous streetscape and mark the line between the Stockade's small-scale mix of commercial, residential and public buildings and the larger commercial development along State Street to the south. The expanded district counts 458 contributing buildings.","period_of_significance":"1664-1930","architect_builder":"various","architectural_style":"Italianate detailing on three-story, three-bay row buildings with first-floor storefronts","criteria":[],"status_note":"The district is listed as occupied; two of the three added buildings combine commercial and residential use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.286147-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84002963.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002963/ac1b5f3635-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002963/ac1b5f3635-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lawrence_the_Indian_statue,_Schenectady,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lawrence_the_Indian_statue,_Schenectady,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321705","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockade_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7617933"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/schenectady-county/stockade-historic-district-boundary-increase-84002963/"}
