It is also representative of late 19th century New England industrial construction. It was considered locally to be among the largest and best-equipped piano case factories in the world.","narrative":"Built in 1895 at 54 Green Street in Leominster, this brick factory made piano cases for the Wellington Piano Case Company. The main section rises four stories, with a central stair tower topped by a crenelated parapet, recessed window bays and corbelled brickwork. A two-story wing, a boiler room with a tall chimney and a five-story addition from 1901 complete the complex. Frank E. Wellington founded the company in 1895, and at about 80,000 square feet the plant was regarded locally as one of the largest of its kind. It employed 150 people and produced about 12,000 cases a year for pianos sold through New York partners. Piano sales fell after World War I, and the company closed in 1929. The 1938 hurricane damaged the building, and local businessmen bought and repaired it for a furniture maker that stayed until 1983. It was listed for its industrial association and typical construction.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899, 1900-","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late 19th century functional mill building","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacant at the time of nomination; the previous tenant left in February 1983, and a developer planned a certified historic rehabilitation into housing.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.359465-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/40/7974/63797440/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002922.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002922/0ec5679750-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002922/0ec5679750-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wellington_Piano_Case_Company_Building,_Leominster_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wellington_Piano_Case_Company_Building,_Leominster_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63797440","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellington_Piano_Case_Company_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7981454"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/wellington-piano-case-company-building-84002922/"}
