It is an integral component of the Augspurger Amish/Mennonite Settlement thematic group and was judged locally significant. The reviewer recommended acceptance under criteria A and C.","narrative":"This brick farmhouse near Trenton in Madison Township, Butler County, was built in 1834 by Christian Iutzi, who arrived in the county in 1832 with a group of about 100 Hessian Mennonites. He cleared the timber himself and named the farm \"Middlehof\" after his German home. The two-story house follows an \"I\" house form, with a four-bay facade, an off-center doorway, a rubblestone foundation and common-bond brickwork. Inside are fireplaces in the parlor and in the basement room below, along with an open stairway. A small porch dates from about 1910, the year a fire damaged the interior and the burned section was rebuilt. A frame barn, brick summer kitchen and several sheds remain in the barnyard. After Iutzi died in 1857, his daughter Susanna and son-in-law Peter Kennel bought the homestead. The house is regarded as the earliest standing home built by a member of the Amish Mennonite congregation, which is why it was listed as part of the Augspurger settlement group.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Christian Iutzi (owner who cleared the timber and built the house)","architectural_style":"\"I\" house form; Amish/Mennonite house type","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as a residence; condition listed as fair.
