It is tied to the founding of Hartwick College as a liberal arts institution in 1928 and was the only part of the Pope and Baum campus plan ever built.","narrative":"Bresee Hall is a three-story neo-Georgian brick building on a terrace of the Hartwick College campus above the Susquehanna Valley in Oneonta. Begun in 1928 and finished in 1929, it has a symmetrical thirteen-bay east facade, Flemish bond brickwork, a pedimented entrance pavilion with Composite columns, a modillioned wooden cornice and a copper roof topped by an octagonal cupola. Architect John Russell Pope, working with Dwight James Baum, designed it as part of a formal terraced campus plan inspired in part by the University of Virginia. The Great Depression halted that plan, leaving Bresee Hall as the only building completed from it. The hall also marks the transformation of Hartwick Seminary, a Lutheran school chartered in 1816, into the non-sectarian liberal arts Hartwick College, made possible by Oneonta's offer of money and a campus site. Few alterations have occurred since construction.","period_of_significance":"1900- (specific date 1928)","architect_builder":"John Russell Pope & Dwight James Baum; General Contractor Williamson Co., Elmira, N.Y.","architectural_style":"Neo-Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in excellent condition and largely unaltered since 1928, apart from a hyphen connecting it to Arnold Hall, a replaced cupola balustrade and minor interior remodeling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.159056-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84002892.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002892/441d21126a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002892/441d21126a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"ErixS","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bresee_Hall,_Hartwick_College,_Oneonta_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">ErixS</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bresee_Hall,_Hartwick_College,_Oneonta_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320911","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bresee_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4961844"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/otsego-county/bresee-hall-84002892/"}
