It carries the road over the former Erie-Lackawanna railway main line.","why_significant":"The bridge is an intact example of a metal through Pratt truss tied to Middletown's late nineteenth century transportation system. It was built as a trolley bridge by the Middletown-Goshen Traction Company to reach the State Homeopathic Asylum. It is also one of only two surviving New York State structures by the Havana Bridge Works.","narrative":"Spanning the Erie-Lackawanna railway main line at the eastern end of Oliver Avenue in Middletown, this 105-foot pin-connected Pratt truss bridge was completed in 1895. The Middletown-Goshen Traction Company built it as a trolley crossing so its line could reach the State Homeopathic Asylum for the Insane, a major employer and health institution. Havana Bridge Works of Havana, New York, supplied the metalwork, while local builder Robert O. Lewis built the stone abutments. The bridge carried trolleys for nearly thirty years, until the traction company stopped operating in 1924, and then was converted to automobile use. It still connects State Route 211 with Lake Avenue. Its original character remains largely intact despite an asphalt-covered deck, and plaques on the portals record its construction. It is one of only two surviving New York bridges by Havana Bridge Works, which adds to its value as an example of late nineteenth century bridge engineering.","period_of_significance":"1895","architect_builder":"Havana Bridge Works; abutments by Robert O.
