Its unusual six-bay facade resulted from three bays being added to an original three-bay, side-hall section. It also recalls Canandaigua's first major period of development and the early nineteenth century trend of wealthy settlers building mansions on large estates away from the town core.","narrative":"Set on a 1.7-acre lot on the western edge of Canandaigua, this two-story brick house was built in the 1820s on a slightly raised basement. Its gable roof has stepped gable ends, and semi-elliptical oculi pierce the gables beside the interior chimneys, of which only the northwest one survives. The six-bay facade is unusual. Tradition holds that the southern three bays were built first with a side-hall plan, and three more bays were added to the north, giving two distinct sections with differently spaced windows. A rear wing, a twentieth-century entrance porch and a deck were added later. Inside, the house retains wainscoting, wide pine floors, brick flooring in the basement and a staircase with a carved pineapple newel. A late nineteenth century frame barn also survives. The house is valued as a substantially intact example of Federal architecture in Canandaigua and as a reminder of the town's early growth and its wealthy settlers' large estates.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a residence, as originally; condition listed as good, with the original site retained.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.413072-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84002861.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002861/34f8a836f0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002861/34f8a836f0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Canandaigua_020_Thaddeus_Chapin_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Canandaigua_020_Thaddeus_Chapin_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314085","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thaddeus_Chapin_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7708971"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ontario-county/chapin-thaddeus-house-84002861/"}
