It rises 2½ stories from a granite foundation to a slate-clad pitched roof and has an L-shaped plan with a fully developed rear ell. A three-story flat-roofed entrance tower projects from the angle of the ell, with triple arched windows on the third story and an entry under a heavy bracketed hood. An open porch runs along the facade. Windows mostly hold one-over-one sash, and the gables have round-headed windows and decorative matchboarding. Original granite curbing and posts remain in front. The house is one of a few fashionable survivors in the Chestnut-Maple Street area, which was developed after the Civil War. Charles Wood owned it from the 1880s to at least 1906. His house, land and barn were valued at $9,000 in 1889, when the average working man held about $3,000.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"High Victorian Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; the form reports no major alterations and says the house has not been moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.194763-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/74/7909/63790974/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002860.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002860/197270e542-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002860/197270e542-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_WoodHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_WoodHouse.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"89002328","name":"Nobility Hill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/nobility-hill-historic-district-89002328/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790974","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Wood_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5083688"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/wood-charles-house-84002860/"}
