Turnbull. The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be a fine local example of the Italianate style. It uses the three-bay, center-entry form common in Stoneham but is unusually embellished. It is described as the best of about six similar houses in town, and it retains its integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship.","narrative":"Built around 1865 at 6 Pine Street in Stoneham, this two-story house follows the three-bay, center-entry layout found in many of the town's Italianate homes, yet it is far more elaborately decorated than most. It has a pitched roof with a center cross gable, decorative match boarding in the gables, a projecting bracketed cornice, a decorative apron in the front gable, pedimented windows and an elaborate entry porch with chamfered posts, brackets and truss work. The house keeps its original slate roof, two-over-two sash, and granite curbing and posts, although shingles have replaced the clapboards and a much later ell was added at the rear. It was valued at $3,750 in 1874, well above most local residences. The first owner, R.P. Turnbull, was a partner in the nearby Tidd Tannery on Pine Street. The house is considered the best of about six similar houses in Stoneham and a fine local example of the Italianate style.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate with Eastlake details","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; a rear ell and shingle siding are later alterations, and the original slate roof and 2/2 sash remain.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.976397-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/46/7910/63791046/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002839.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002839/5ef1a50576-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002839/5ef1a50576-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:R.P._Turnbull_House,_Stoneham_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:R.P._Turnbull_House,_Stoneham_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791046","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R.P._Turnbull_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7273395"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/turnbull-r-p-house-84002839/"}
