It embodies the distinctive characteristics of turn-of-the-century fire station design, with a garage, an office and living section, and a hose drying tower. It meets criterion C and retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association.","narrative":"Standing at Central and Emerson Streets beside Central Square, this fire station serves as a focal point of Stoneham's town center. Built around 1916, it is a two-story, L-shaped, flat-roofed building of red brick with contrasting cast stone trim, including keystones, window sills, and door hoods carried on console brackets. Denticulated cornices run along both the main block and the tower. A four-story hip-roofed hose drying tower sits in the angle of the L and dominates the design. Italian in feeling, it has an enclosed three-story base, a richly ornamented bracketed cornice, and an open arched top story under a pantiled roof. Inside, one end of the L holds the garage and the other holds offices and living space, while the tower allowed fire hoses to be hung to dry. Stoneham's best example of Renaissance Revival public architecture, it reflects a fire station type common in Massachusetts from the 1880s into the early twentieth century. It remains the town's fire station.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Renaissance Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as the town's fire station; first floor sash was altered around 1970.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.230219-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/26/7912/63791226/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002831.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002831/d47f8e8179-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002831/d47f8e8179-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stoneham_Fire_Station,_Stoneham_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stoneham_Fire_Station,_Stoneham_MA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"89002277","name":"Central Square Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/central-square-historic-district-89002277/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791226","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoneham_Firestation","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7619186"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/stoneham-firestation-84002831/"}
