It represents a housing type from Stoneham's major period of significance and retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. The form cites Criterion A.","narrative":"Built about 1880-1885 at 2-4 Montvale Street in Stoneham, this Italianate double house is a large two-story, clapboard-sided building, six bays long and two bays deep, with paired entries at the center of the facade. A pitched roof with paired interior chimneys covers it, windows have simple surrounds with 2/2 sash, and the entries are topped by transoms and a continuous bracketed hood. The site was an orchard in 1874, but by 1889 maps show a row of workers' double houses beside the E.L. Patch Company and several factories. John Steele, who held considerable property around town in the nineteenth century, owned the whole row of identical houses. This one is the best preserved of the row and one of only two well preserved double workers' houses in Stoneham. It has had no major alterations and remains a two-family home. It was listed as a representative example of the town's industrial-era worker housing.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Still used as a two-family residence; no major alterations and not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.335238-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/98/7920/63792098/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002829.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002829/b054eb8d58-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002829/b054eb8d58-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_JohnSteeleHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_JohnSteeleHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792098","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Steele_House_(Stoneham,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6258959"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/steele-john-house-84002829/"}
