It is described as the first fully developed Arts and Crafts interior published in his journal The Craftsman. It is regarded as the first Craftsman house, which helped popularize the Arts and Crafts house in the United States.","narrative":"Built in 1900 about two miles east of downtown Syracuse, this two and one-half story frame house has a Queen Anne exterior with asymmetrical bays, gables, beveled siding and shingles. Its importance lies inside. Furniture maker Gustav Stickley, who bought the house in 1900 and lived there until 1905, redesigned the interior in 1903 after a December 1902 fire destroyed the original. Using chestnut paneling, exposed ceiling beams, inglenooks, fireplaces and rooms that flow into one another, he created an open, unornamented plan. Interior views and plans appeared in The Craftsman in February 1903, and the interior is regarded as the first fully developed Arts and Crafts design he published and the first Craftsman house. Much of the first and second floor work survives, along with a third-floor apartment Stickley used in later life until his death in 1942. The building is now divided into three apartments.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Gustav Stickley","architectural_style":"Queen Anne (exterior); Arts and Crafts (1903 interior)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition rated fair; the structure is currently divided into three apartments.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.522877-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84002820.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002820/19da85f629-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002820/19da85f629-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StickleyGustavHouse1sm.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StickleyGustavHouse1sm.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100011439","name":"Westcott-University Neighborhood Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/westcott-university-neighborhood-historic-district-100011439/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320459","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustav_Stickley_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5621228"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/stickley-gustav-house-84002820/"}
