It faces south on a raised mound of land across from Leach Park.","why_significant":"The nomination cites its role in the settlement node at the junction of four major roads, its link to two public-minded shoe manufacturers, Stillman Pratt and Stillman E. Parker, and its status as a largely intact example of the colonnaded-porch type of Greek Revival architecture. It is one of only three such houses in Reading.","narrative":"This Greek Revival cottage at 472 Summer Avenue in Reading was built probably in the late 1840s. It adapts the traditional one-and-one-half story Georgian-Federal vernacular form. Its high-pitched roof extends over a veranda supported by four fluted Ionic columns, and the front facade is flushboarded. Corner pilasters carry a Greek key motif, and windows and doors have fluted architrave surrounds with corner blocks. Only three houses in Reading share this form, and one stands very close by, suggesting they were built together or one served as a model. The house is linked with two shoe manufacturers who served the town. Stillman Pratt owned it in 1854, employed up to fifty men, and served as a selectman. Stillman E. Parker owned it in 1875, served as selectman, assessor and School Committee member, and represented the town in the General Court in 1859. It was listed for its place in the settlement at a four-road junction, these associations, and its largely intact architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Major alterations listed are an ell on the west and dormers on the south; the form says it retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and feeling.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.17073-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/68/7908/63790868/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002799.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002799/20ade72918-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002799/20ade72918-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ReadingMA_StillmanPrattHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ReadingMA_StillmanPrattHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790868","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stillman_Pratt_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7617255"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/pratt-stillman-house-84002799/"}
