It was one of a group of Pratt family houses that gave the name \"Pratt Row\" to the area. It is also linked to Joseph L. Pratt, an innovative shoemaker who used a stitching machine early and later served as selectman.","narrative":"Built around 1809 at 456 Haverhill Street in Reading, this clapboarded house is a plain example of the local Georgian-Federal building tradition. It is only one room deep, with a tall narrow door framed by a simple surround and a high entablature. A thin molded cornice stops short of the wide cornerboards, and small second-floor windows sit well below the plate. A two-story rear ell with a shed roof, often called an English gable, is a form commonly seen in Reading. The house was one of several Pratt family homes that gave the name Pratt Row to the neighborhood in the 19th century. Samuel Pratt, a blacksmith, owned it before 1809, and his son Joseph L. Pratt, also a blacksmith, held it by 1835. Joseph began making shoes in 1834, was among the first townsmen to use a stitching machine, later sold lamps and glassware, and served many years as selectman. The house retains its original location, setting and much of its original material.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal (vernacular Georgian-Federal)","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and feeling; sash was replaced c. 1870.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.121782-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/19/7907/63790719/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002797.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002797/71914436c1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002797/71914436c1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ReadingMA_PrattHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ReadingMA_PrattHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790719","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pratt_House_(Reading,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7238764"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/pratt-house-84002797/"}
