It is said to retain integrity of location, design, setting and feeling.","narrative":"Built around 1741-42, this farmhouse at 434 Haverhill Street in Reading was the home of Daniel Nichols, who bought the land from the Town of Reading. He was probably a farmer and took part in church and town affairs between 1742 and 1760, serving as tithing man, selectman and surveyor of highways. His son-in-law Amos Pearson lived here next. Later the house was divided into a two-family dwelling by the Parker and Pratt families, and so many Pratts lived nearby that upper Haverhill Street became known as \"Pratt Row.\" The building follows a common Reading house type of the later 18th century: rectangular, five bays long and one bay deep, with a rear leanto, two interior chimneys and granite foundations. Its main architectural emphasis is the door surround, with paneled pilasters, a high entablature and sidelights. An ell, the subject of an 1849 deed, may have been added then. It was listed for its farming past, its family associations and its largely unchanged Georgian form.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular (Georgian)","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.896637-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/56/7914/63791456/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002753.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002753/5362780d2e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002753/5362780d2e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_Nichols_Homestead,_Reading_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_Nichols_Homestead,_Reading_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791456","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Nichols_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5218262"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/nichols-daniel-homestead-84002753/"}
