It retains integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship, and it is locally unique for its lean-to form and original small window openings. It is cited under criterion C.","narrative":"Built around 1700 by Thomas Millard of Reading, this two-story Colonial house at 218 Green Street is among the best preserved early homes in Stoneham. It has an asymmetrical four-bay facade, an entry in the inner southerly bay, a pitched roof with a rear lean-to, and an off-center chimney. Clapboard siding, a boxed cornice, simple corner boards and slightly projecting window architraves define its exterior. Windows keep their original size and placement, with 9/6 sash on the first story. The house was sold to the Souther family in 1725 and later passed to members of the Green family. Early town historians Dean, Stevens and Buckman all mention it as an early landmark. It is one of only two Stoneham buildings keeping a nearly intact early eighteenth-century form, and it is locally unusual for its surviving lean-to and small original window openings. It was listed for its architectural significance and its integrity.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Thomas Millard of Reading (builder); architect unknown","architectural_style":"Colonial","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; the form describes the house as in process of restoration, including a recent restoration of the entry.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.304554-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/71/7906/63790671/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002752.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002752/0ed4580442-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002752/0ed4580442-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_MillardSoutherGreenHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_MillardSoutherGreenHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790671","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millard%E2%80%93Souther%E2%80%93Green_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6858497"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/millard-souther-green-house-84002752/"}
