Manning, and as a good example of Stick style architecture. It keeps its original location, design, setting, materials and workmanship.","narrative":"Built in 1877 at 140 High Street in Reading, this clapboard house was the home of Jacob W. Manning, a prominent nurseryman. It sits on a high hill near the Highlands railroad depot, with large shade and ornamental trees nearby. The architect is unknown. The house shows the main features of the Stick style: a high peaked roof, several kinds of gables, tall thin windows, vertical and horizontal members, decorative half timbering, cut-out work and turning, and tall chimneys. A band of vertical siding with small holes also appears on another Reading house of the period. Manning's nursery covered 20 acres and employed 30 men by 1894, and he and his son landscaped the Massachusetts building at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. He specialized in evergreens, introduced a new strawberry, and was the first in the United States to plant from the original Concord grape stock. The house served as a landmark for travelers arriving at the Highlands station. It has seen no major alterations.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Stick style","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Form reports no major alterations, no moved building and no standing outbuildings.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.360657-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/77/7922/63792277/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002745.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002745/08e9a3204f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002745/08e9a3204f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ReadingMA_JacobManningHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ReadingMA_JacobManningHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792277","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob_Manning_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715623"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/manning-jacob-house-84002745/"}
