U. Lyon, a shoe cutter. Architect unknown.","why_significant":"The house is described as one of Stoneham's best preserved and best detailed examples of a five-bay, center-entry Greek Revival cottage. It retains integrity of location, design, setting and materials, and keeps features such as granite curbing and posts. It also illustrates the living quarters of the shoe workers who made up the mainstay of the town's population during its shoe manufacturing boom.","narrative":"Built around 1850 at 9 Warren Street in Stoneham, this five-bay, center-entry cottage is a well preserved example of the Greek Revival style. Its heavy corner pilasters, wide frieze, raking cornice and pedimented dormers reflect its mid-century date. The windows keep their original six-over-six sash, and the entry is unframed, which is somewhat unusual for the type. Clapboards cover the house and a rear ell, and the building rests on a granite foundation. It faces east on a slight rise, approached by granite steps and fronted by granite curbing and posts. T. U. Lyon, a shoe cutter, had it built in the early years of the town's shoe manufacturing boom, so it shows how a typical worker of that industry lived. Warren Street was an older north-south route that predated the Medford-Andover Turnpike of 1806. The house was listed for its architectural integrity and its intact illustration of a locally important housing type.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in residential use, with no major alterations recorded.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.413065-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/66/7908/63790866/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002743.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002743/3460fdbcb4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002743/3460fdbcb4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_TULyonHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_TULyonHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790866","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T.U._Lyon_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715875"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/lyon-t-u-house-84002743/"}
