It has shingle and clapboard walls and an original barn.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it a good local example of the transitional Queen Anne/Colonial Revival style. It is also associated with Walter Keene, a prominent businessman and real estate developer who laid out the Keene Street and High Street area. It is said to retain integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship.","narrative":"Set on the slope of Farm Hill in Stoneham, this house at 28 High Street was built around the turn of the twentieth century for Walter S. Keene. It mixes two styles: Colonial Revival features such as a rectangular plan, hipped roof, balustraded entry porch and modified Palladian window, and Queen Anne touches such as combined shingle and clapboard walls and a corner tower with a one-story porch. Keene, born in Palmyra, Maine in 1858, came to Stoneham in 1882, worked as a salesman for a Boston leather company, and helped found two local banks. He also developed the area around Keene Street and High Street, dividing roughly a dozen regular lots rather than using the irregular lots and winding streets typical of suburban subdividers of the period. The house illustrates the suburban growth of the 1880s and 1890s, when fashionable residences lined wide, tree-shaded streets. It retains its original barn and has had no major alterations.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne/Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Listed as a present residence; the form reports no major alterations and says the original barn survives.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.426801-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/43/7918/63791843/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002719.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002719/26fe3ea392-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002719/26fe3ea392-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_WalterKeeneHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_WalterKeeneHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791843","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Keene_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7965326"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/keene-walter-house-84002719/"}
