It has two identical Stick Style houses built in 1874 and two Queen Anne carriage houses built around 1884.","why_significant":"The estate is tied to Eli W. Hoyt and Freeman B. Shedd, Lowell businessmen whose Hoyt's German Cologne and Rubifoam dentifrice became nationally known. The paired houses and mirror-image carriage houses are excellent examples of the Stick and Queen Anne styles. Their distinctive relationship to each other adds to that value.","narrative":"Two matching houses and their two large carriage houses make up this estate in Lowell's Belvidere neighborhood. Eli W. Hoyt and Freeman B. Shedd, friends and business partners, built identical Stick Style houses side by side on Andover Street in 1874. Their fortunes came from Hoyt's German Cologne and later Rubifoam, a flavored dentifrice, and both men also developed real estate in Belvidere. Around 1884 a shared barn was moved away and replaced by two mirror-image Queen Anne carriage houses, and the porches were updated with Queen Anne trim. The Hoyt House keeps black walnut woodwork, marble fireplaces, painted ceilings and imported chandeliers. The Shedd House was stuccoed in 1917. The Shedd Carriage House retains its stable fittings, while the Hoyt Carriage House, once a small hospital, has been damaged by fire and vandalism. The estate was listed for its business associations and its architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Mr. Wilkins (reported architect of the houses); Frederick Stickney (attributed, carriage houses); builder James W. Both main houses are private residences.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.098838-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/20/7957/63795720/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002697.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002697/c910f85c3c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002697/c910f85c3c-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hoyt-Shedd_Estates,_Lowell,_MA_-_DSC00084.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hoyt-Shedd_Estates,_Lowell,_MA_-_DSC00084.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"00000568","name":"Andover Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/andover-street-historic-district-00000568/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795720","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoyt-Shedd_Estate","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5922905"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/hoyt-shedd-estate-84002697/"}
