Horace E. Wallace is recorded as the probable original owner.","why_significant":"The house is significant for its role in developing Reading's west side as a well-to-do residential area for railroad commuters and local businessmen. It is also an elaborate example of Queen Anne architecture. It retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and feeling.","narrative":"Built around 1895 on a large lot facing south on Howard Street in Reading, this Queen Anne house shows the style's taste for complexity. It has a turret, oriel, projecting gable, inset window and curved wall plane. Clapboards and shingles cover the walls, and decoration includes porch spoolwork, imbricated shingles, stained-glass windows, dentils on the cornice and a copper finial on the turret. A deep veranda encircles the house. Howard Street was accepted by the town in 1893, and the area grew as middle-class railroad commuters settled in a suburb within reach of downtown Boston. Horace E. Wallace, an out-of-town owner from Waltham, was assessed for the house in 1900 and may have been its first owner. By 1906 it belonged to Calvin P. Atwood, a clerk who commuted to Boston. The house was listed for its part in the west side's development as a residential area and as an elaborate example of Queen Anne architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.507984-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/40/7911/63791140/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002675.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002675/1514f5ce25-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002675/1514f5ce25-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ReadingMA_77HowardStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ReadingMA_77HowardStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791140","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_77_Howard_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914464"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-77-howard-street-84002675/"}
