It is a private residence, used as a house from the start.","why_significant":"The cottage is described as Stoneham's only intact example of a Downingesque Gothic Revival cottage. It was built when Greek Revival was the prevailing local style. It keeps its original pointed windows, shaped shutters, exposed rafters and vergeboards, and it retains integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship.","narrative":"Built around 1850 on Marble Street in Stoneham, this T-plan cottage is the town's best-preserved example of the Gothic Revival style promoted by A.J. Downing. It went up at a time when Greek Revival houses were the local norm, which makes it stand out. The house is clad in clapboards with narrow cornerboards and sits under a steep, overhanging roof with exposed rafters. A cross-gable frontispiece and an extended rear ell shape its plan. Gothic touches include pierced vergeboards in the cross gable and pointed windows on the second story, while the first-story windows have unusually heavy lintels and 6/6 sash. A small glazed porch now shelters the entry. A few other Stoneham houses were built in this style, but most have lost many original details. This one retains its pointed-arch windows, shaped shutters, exposed rafters and vergeboard decoration, and it was listed for its architectural value and integrity.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in residential use; a small, mostly glazed front porch has been added.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.006245-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/36/7908/63790836/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002661.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002661/23355b7a98-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002661/23355b7a98-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_HouseAt114MarbleStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_HouseAt114MarbleStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790836","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_114_Marble_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715565"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-114-marble-street-84002661/"}
