It is a clapboard house with a one-story ell on its east side. The architect and original owner are unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of Stoneham's best preserved examples of a traditional Greek Revival cottage, reflecting the town's early industrial period. It keeps integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. It also survives near Main Street, which has lost many early buildings.","narrative":"This c. 1820-1830 cottage at 107 William Street in Stoneham is regarded as one of the town's best preserved examples of a traditional Greek Revival house. It keeps the five-bay, center-entry facade of earlier houses instead of turning its gable end to the street. Its later date shows in its height, which produces a central window placement, in twin chimneys and in a wide frieze. The main block sits on a granite foundation, while a one-story ell on the east side, possibly once a shop, rests on brick. Clapboards cover the whole, with plain cornerboards, a molded water table, 6/6 sash and an entry with sidelights and a very narrow transom. The house stood beside the Hay Tavern, an early landmark near William and Central Streets, and dates from the period of growth that followed construction of the Main Street turnpike in 1806. Its survival near Main Street, where many early buildings have been lost, adds to its importance.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; no major alterations and not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.382625-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/60/7908/63790860/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002660.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002660/01862e8380-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002660/01862e8380-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_107WilliamStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_107WilliamStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790860","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_107_William_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5913857"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-107-william-street-84002660/"}
