It is clapboard-sided and faces north on a bend of an old road.","why_significant":"The nomination cites its role in a node of settlement at the junction of four major roads, its connection with longtime Reading cabinetmaker Jonathan Heselton, and its value as an intact example of Federal vernacular architecture in Reading. It retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and feeling.","narrative":"This one and one-half story, five-bay clapboard house at 483 Summer Avenue in Reading was built between 1830 and 1835. Although it dates from after 1830, it follows the Federal style, with a tall, narrow doorway surround of pilasters supporting a full entablature and projecting cornice. The form describes this house type as deeply ingrained in local building practice. An unusual chimney foundation of three parallel brick walls topped by large timbers is also noted, and it is thought to have been rebuilt at some point. The house stands at a node of settlement where Summer Avenue, Walnut Street, Hopkins Street and Main Street meet. Samuel S. Porter bought the property in 1835 and sold it in 1849 to Jonathan Heselton, a cabinetmaker whose surname was often misspelled in records. It was listed for its place in the neighborhood's development, its link to Heselton, and its intact Federal vernacular character. Ells and dormers were added in the 19th century.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Listed as a private dwelling; 19th-century ells and dormers were added, and the form says it was probably not moved.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.311827-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/22/7921/63792122/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002652.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002652/15f2006c8a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002652/15f2006c8a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ReadingMA_483SummerAvenue.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ReadingMA_483SummerAvenue.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792122","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_483_Summer_Avenue","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914346"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-483-summer-avenue-84002652/"}
