Hawkins, a machinery and shoe manufacturer who owned it from construction until at least 1906. The house has an irregular side-hall plan and a complex roof line covered in scalloped slate. Notable features include a bracketed entry porch with double doors, arched bay windows and dormers, and a heavily bracketed cornice. It rests on a granite foundation, is clad in clapboards, and sits on a hilly lot behind an uncoursed granite retaining wall. A two-and-a-half-story carriage house to the rear has a shallow mansard roof with silver scalloped shingles and polychrome diamond insets. Although small in scale, the cottage was built with lavish wood, glass and slate detail, and it is counted among the most finely crafted buildings in Stoneham. It was built during the town's period of greatest prosperity. Both structures remain well maintained with original materials and finishes intact.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Second Empire","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Both the house and the barn are described as well maintained, with all original materials and finishes intact; no major alterations are recorded.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.881897-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/17/7922/63792217/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002639.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002639/0293b82225-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002639/0293b82225-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_LorenzoDHawkinsHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_LorenzoDHawkinsHouse.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"89002328","name":"Nobility Hill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/nobility-hill-historic-district-89002328/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792217","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorenzo_D._Hawkins_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6680686"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/hawkins-lorenzo-d-house-84002639/"}
