Its walls are shingle and stone, and the architect is unknown. Tapering porch columns of fieldstone support a gable with trellis work in the peak. A fieldstone chimney is visible along its whole length, and the roof curves upward at the overhang with pointed eaves extending well beyond the walls. A gable window was replaced around 1980. The design combines hand-crafted natural materials, utility and cozy shelter, ideas typical of the period. Willow Street stayed largely undeveloped for years, possibly because the ground was low and often wet; only one house stood on it in 1889. George Hartwell, an engineer, lived here with his wife in 1920. The house was listed because it is an excellent local example of the bungalow style and retains its original character.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Bungalow","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as a dwelling; a gable window was replaced around 1980.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.783792-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/29/7906/63790629/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002635.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002635/99dc0f5a32-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002635/99dc0f5a32-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ReadingMA_HartwellHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ReadingMA_HartwellHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790629","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hartwell_House_(Reading,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715512"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/hartwell-house-84002635/"}
