Its architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it a fine local example of the Italianate style and one of the few period houses remaining on Main Street. It retains integrity of location, design and workmanship. It is also tied to Onslow Gilmore, a realtor, insurance man and town official.","narrative":"Built around 1875 at 477 Main Street in Stoneham, this Italianate house was the home of Onslow Gilmore, a realtor and insurance man who owned considerable property in the 1870s and 1880s. Gilmore came to Stoneham from New Hampshire in 1850 and served as town treasurer and state representative. He was also treasurer of the Stoneham Savings Bank and a director and treasurer of the E.L. Patch Company. The house has an L-shaped plan with the entry and an open porch on carved posts at the angle of the L. Surviving details include a bracketed cornice, a patterned slate roof, paired arched gable windows, first-story bay windows, original 2/2 sash, and granite curbing and posts. Asbestos siding has replaced the clapboards. It is nearly identical to its neighbor at 481 Main Street. It is valued as one of the few period houses left on a street once lined with elaborate residences, civic buildings and commercial structures.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"High Victorian Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; the house is now clad in asbestos siding, but much of its original trim and its patterned slate roof remain.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.008869-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/72/7909/63790972/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002625.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002625/050ffded61-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002625/050ffded61-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_OnslowGilmoreHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_OnslowGilmoreHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790972","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onslow_Gilmore_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7094559"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/gilmore-onslow-house-84002625/"}
