A. Durgin, a shoe dealer.","why_significant":"The house is one of Stoneham's few Second Empire residences that keeps its original form, features and setting intact. It is a good local example of the style and a well preserved, typical representative of the town's residential growth during its most prosperous period. It meets criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built around 1870 at 113 Summer Street in Stoneham, this large Second Empire cottage was the home of E. A. Durgin, a local dealer in boots, shoes and rubbers who began his business in 1883 in a shop on Main Street. The house has an irregular plan formed by a side-hall core, a north side wing and a rear ell. Its most prominent feature is a steeply pitched tower rising above the entry, along with open porches, a bracketed cornice, pedimented dormers and two-over-two sash. It faces west on a large triangular lot at Summer and Pleasant Streets, which retains its original granite curbing, posts and steps and a rear barn with a cupola. The asphalt roof is the only obvious alteration. It was listed as a well preserved example of Second Empire design and of Stoneham's residential growth during its most prosperous period. A later resident was J. Fassenden, an upholsterer.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Second Empire","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still a residence; the only noted alteration is an asphalt roof added about 1950.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.341893-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/15/7922/63792215/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002572.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002572/c17c76caeb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002572/c17c76caeb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E._A._Durgin_House,_Stoneham_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E._A._Durgin_House,_Stoneham_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792215","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._A._Durgin_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5321690"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/durgin-e-a-house-84002572/"}
