It has rear and side wings and clapboard walls.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a good local example of a Second Empire cottage that keeps its original form, features and setting. It is also significant as the home of a local shoe manufacturer and as a typical, well preserved representative of Stoneham's residential growth during its most prosperous period. It meets criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built around 1865 at 42 High Street in Stoneham, this small side hall cottage was the home of George Cowdrey, a Stoneham-born shoe manufacturer who was active in town affairs and served in the State Legislature. Cowdrey Street is named for him, and his landholdings included other lots nearby. The house is one of the town's few Second Empire residences to keep its original form, features and setting. Its mansard roof, bracketed cornice and segmentally arched dormers with scrolled enframements are typical of the style. An open porch with a corner gazebo on Tuscan columns and leaded stained glass sidelights were added about 1900. The builder used the slope of Farm Hill to give the house wide views to the west and detailed it carefully despite its modest size. It was the finest early house on a street that later gained several architecturally conscious homes, and it was listed for its architecture and its link to Stoneham's prosperous shoe-making era.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Second Empire","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; the form says the building has not been moved and retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.750375-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/73/7922/63792273/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002557.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002557/c4e533ef84-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002557/c4e533ef84-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_GeorgeCowdreyHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_GeorgeCowdreyHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792273","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Cowdrey_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5538167"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/cowdrey-george-house-84002557/"}
