Chamberlain, with a rear stable topped by a cupola.","why_significant":"The house is described as an excellent local example of the Italianate style and one of three intact side-hall Italianate houses in Stoneham. It is also tied to Samuel W. Chamberlain, an inventor and manufacturer of shoe machinery who invented a heel-burnishing machine and controlled 22 patents.","narrative":"Built around 1864 at 3 Winthrop Street in Stoneham, this side-hall Italianate house was the home of Samuel W. Chamberlain, an inventor and manufacturer of machinery. Chamberlain invented a machine for burnishing boot and shoe heels and held the patent until 1873, when he sold half interest to a Boston association. He continued to develop improvements and, by one account, controlled 22 patents. He also made shoe machinery such as the Hill Scouring and Buffing Machine. The three-bay, south-facing facade is clapboarded, with corner pilasters, a frieze, a raking cornice and a granite foundation. Windows hold 2/2 sash under slightly projecting caps, and the entry has a bracketed hood and three granite steps. Shed-roof dormers may be original. A granite curb and posts survive, along with a rear stable with a cupola. The house is one of three intact side-hall Italianate houses in the town and retains its original character.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a residence; dormers are the only listed alteration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.787382-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/74/7921/63792174/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002536.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002536/a84a5a9f5f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002536/a84a5a9f5f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_SamuelChamberlainHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_SamuelChamberlainHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792174","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Chamberlain_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7411084"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/chamberlain-samuel-house-84002536/"}
