It is the only one of Stoneham's romantically inspired mid-century residences to retain its original setting. It is said to have integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship.","narrative":"Built about 1858 at 4 Woodland Road in Stoneham, this granite Italianate house faces Spot Pond and was constructed for John Bottume, a commercial merchant whose son J. Frank became an attorney. The house has a T-shaped plan, uncoursed granite ashlar walls, a bracketed roofline with full raking cornice at the gable ends, and round-arch windows. It is somewhat more modest than the nearby William Bailey Lang House, which it resembles. Together they are the only survivors of about half a dozen fine houses built for Boston businessmen at mid-century, men who used Spot Pond as a retreat and took little part in Stoneham's business or political life. The property was acquired by the Middlesex Fells Reservation in 1894, and it is now used as a Metropolitan District Commission supervisors' house. Its curving granite wall with entrance posts still separates it from Woodland Road. It was listed for architectural significance because it keeps its original setting, and no major alterations are recorded.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as the Metropolitan District Commission Supervisors' House; no major alterations recorded and the house has not been moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.400851-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/86/7909/63790986/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002513.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002513/4f3ea55e7b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002513/4f3ea55e7b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_JohnBottumeHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_JohnBottumeHouse.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"89002249","name":"Middlesex Fells Reservoirs Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/middlesex-fells-reservoirs-historic-district-89002249/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790986","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Botume_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6222551"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/bottume-john-house-84002513/"}
