The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The depot is cited for its integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship, and for its association with Stoneham's growth as a commuter suburb. It replaced an earlier frame station and is the only 19th-century depot in town still on its original site.","narrative":"Built around 1895 at 36 Pine Street, this brick depot served the Boston & Maine Railroad in Stoneham. It is a low, one-story rectangular building under an overhanging hipped roof. Granite stringcourses form a watertable and window sills, and the 12/12 sash windows are interspersed with five-panel doors topped by rectangular transoms. A cross gable with decorative shingles holds a large fanlight that was once glazed and has since been blocked. The station replaced a gambrel-roofed frame depot shown on an 1879 bird's-eye view, built when the railroad reached Franklin Street in 1863. Beside Central Square, it reinforced the area's role as the town's commercial, institutional and industrial center and reflects Stoneham's development as a commuter suburb. It is the only 19th-century depot still on its original site, since the Farm Hill station was moved and converted to housing. The building retains its original location, design, materials and workmanship.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"None stated (form lists style as \"None\")","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as a printing service at the time of the survey; the form lists the original use as a train station, and the once-glazed gable fanlight has been blocked.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.733786-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/27/7923/63792327/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002510.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002510/fcf4cb476b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002510/fcf4cb476b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Boston_and_Maine_Railroad_Depot,_Stoneham_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Boston_and_Maine_Railroad_Depot,_Stoneham_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792327","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoneham_station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4948219"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/boston-and-maine-railroad-depot-84002510/"}
