It is associated with the early development of Stoneham's transportation system through Padilla Beard, the first coach driver on the Reading-Boston stage line, who later became a railroad conductor.","narrative":"Built around 1850 on a corner lot at 18 Maple Street in Stoneham, this clapboard house shows a transitional blend of Greek Revival and Italianate design. It follows a simple side hall plan and is decorated with corner pilasters, shaped window lintels and bracketed door hoods. The main entry keeps its original door with paired, glazed arches. The main block rests on a granite foundation, while a large two-story rear ell sits on brick. The house is unusual less for its design than for its high degree of preservation, and no major alterations are recorded. It was listed for its link to Padilla Beard, the first coach driver on the stage line connecting Reading and Boston, which ran from 1833 until a horse car line replaced it in 1859. Beard kept his horses behind the house, and after the railroad arrived in 1861 he worked as a conductor.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival (transitional Greek Revival/Italianate)","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Still in residential use; the form reports no major alterations and a high degree of preservation.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:58.024984-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/13/7923/63792313/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002507.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002507/5a0a62b961-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002507/5a0a62b961-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_PadillaBeardHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StonehamMA_PadillaBeardHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792313","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Padilla_Beard_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7123751"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/beard-padilla-house-84002507/"}
