Its changing uses, from residence and tavern to mill boarding house, reflect Monson's growth into an industrial town. It is also associated with the Norcross family, who contributed to the town's commercial development.","narrative":"Built around 1785 in the center of Monson, Massachusetts, the William Norcross House is a five-bay, two-story late Georgian building with a center chimney, a hip roof with a distinctive monitor, clapboard siding, quoins and a modillion cornice. Its classical entry has a fanlight and pedimented pilasters. Inside are a second-floor ballroom, a domed room, five working fireplaces and a triple-run staircase. William Norcross, a joiner and cabinetmaker, built it as a tavern and family home and later became a prominent local merchant. After his death in 1803 his son Joel lived there until 1835, when the property was sold to the Monson Woolen Manufacturing Company, which used it as a mill boarding house until 1927. A rear ell gained a second story in 1835, and a major rehabilitation in the 1960s added an enclosed porch. The house is valued for its design and for what it shows about Monson's shift from rural village to mill town.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799","architect_builder":"Unknown (the text says William Norcross, a joiner and cabinetmaker, was the original owner and builder and was likely responsible for construction)","architectural_style":"Late Georgian","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in good condition and altered, with present uses given as commercial and private residence; the ell was converted to rental units in the 1960s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.674994-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/69/7951/63795169/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002450.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002450/c1bfbff246-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002450/c1bfbff246-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Norcross_House,_Monson,_Massachusetts.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Norcross_House,_Monson,_Massachusetts.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795169","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Norcross_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8016166"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/hampden-county/norcross-william-house-84002450/"}
