The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is described as one of Methuen's finest examples of the Craftsman house, popular between about 1905 and 1920. It is also a well-preserved bungalow tied to the growth of single-family subdivisions in the early 20th century, after streetcars opened up farmland along Prospect Street. It retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship.","narrative":"Built around 1920 at 606 Prospect Street, this Craftsman-style bungalow is regarded as one of Methuen's finest examples of the type. A steep gable roof is carried by prominent trusses that end in a glazed fieldstone porch. The walls are shingle or clapboard, and the foundation is faced in similar fieldstone. A massive fieldstone chimney breaks the roofline, and two prominent dormers are trimmed with half-timbering and trusses. A hip-roofed shingle barn stands at the rear. The house also reflects how the neighborhood developed. Farmland along Prospect Street was not subdivided until streetcars arrived at the turn of the 20th century, and this bungalow is tied to the single-family subdivisions that followed. The property once included the site of the 1725 town pound at its corner, and the town's first meeting house of 1726 stood across the street. It has seen no major alterations and keeps its original design, materials and setting, which supports its listing for both history and architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Bungalow / Craftsman","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is a private residence, the same as the original use; no major alterations are recorded.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.786704-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/82/7901/63790182/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002432.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002432/38228d47ac-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002432/38228d47ac-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"EraserGirl","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_E._Simpson_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">EraserGirl</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_E._Simpson_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790182","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_E._Simpson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6133213"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/simpson-james-e-house-84002432/"}
