It also reflects the prosperity of the Mohawk Valley and the prominence of the Richardson family in Ilion.","narrative":"Overlooking the Mohawk River and the Barge Canal in Ilion, this brick mansion at 317 West Main Street was built in 1873 for Thomas Richardson, an English-born attorney who served E. Remington & Sons from 1867 to 1886. The two-story house has a hipped roof, projecting bays, an engaged tower with a mansard roof and iron cresting, carved stone lintels and sills, and a patterned slate roof. Inside, black walnut, cherry and chestnut woodwork, eight marble mantels and a bathroom tiled with imported porcelain remain largely intact. The architect is unknown. A frame carriage house and a landscaped four-acre hillside, planted with exotic trees and shrubs that Richardson helped choose, survive as well. The house is regarded as one of the region's finest High Victorian Italianate residences. His children also became local figures: Jennie Richardson was the area's first woman doctor and helped found the Ilion Hospital, and Carrie Richardson helped develop the Ilion Library.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"High Victorian Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; the form reports no major alterations to interior or exterior and says the original landscaping and carriage house survive.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.34127-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84002400.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002400/52a1f8f40a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002400/52a1f8f40a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:IlionNY_ThomasRichardsonHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:IlionNY_ThomasRichardsonHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318184","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Richardson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7793529"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/herkimer-county/richardson-thomas-house-84002400/"}
